Can this fellowship be extended beyond two years?
|

A:
|
On a case–to–case basis, the fellowship may be extended to three years. If the fellow demonstrates before the end of the second year that an extension is critical to the current project and to the advancement of his/her career.

What letters need to be submitted?
|
|
A:
|
Three letters of recommendations or letters of references; one sponsor letter.
|

Can a letter of support replace the sponsor letter?
|
|
A:
|
If the letter of support comes from one faculty member, it is considered a sponsor letter. For multiple letters of support and no specific sponsor letter, the successful candidate must choose his sponsor at the time of acceptance. |
|

Would the applicant be disqualified if one or more required documents are missing?
|
|
A:
|
No, but missing documents will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. |

Would the applicant be disqualified if one of the required documents exceeded the page number limit?

Can an applicant work somewhere other than the MagLabs Tallahassee headquarters?

The position is designed for Tallahassee. However, other sites maybe considered by the committee for highly exceptional candidates. |

Would the sponsor of the applicant also be the advisor?

A:
|
No, the FSU graduate advisor to the applicant is prohibited to act as the sponsor. |

Would the applicant only work for the sponsor/advisor?
|

A:
|
No, the fellow is encouraged to collaborate with other groups in the laboratory independent of the sponsor. |
|

What happens during the review process?
|
|
A:
|
Each reviewer ranks all candidates and presents his or her top 10. The committee then narrows the names down to a short list of five candidates. After further discussion, the committee recommends at most three candidates to the MagLab leadership. |

How can someone get on the search committee?
|

|
Members of the search committee are selected by the committee chair with input from the administration. |

What are the criteria the search committee uses to evaluate an applicant?
|
|
A:
|
In no particular order, the committee evaluates the candidates according to the following criteria:
a. number of publications, with emphasis on first authorship and journal quality
b. quality of proposed research and its relevance to MagLab science programs
c. relevance of candidate's experience and qualifications to science education
d. candidates potential impact to the MagLab mission and user program
e. demonstration of candidates potential for carrying out independent research. |

The applicant may search our website for the contact info for his or her future potential advisor. |

Should the applicant contact the sponsor personally?
|
|
A:
|
Yes. The applicant is also encouraged to discuss with the potential sponsor future research projects of common interest. |

Should the applicant forward the sponsor letter or letter of recommendation personally?
|
|
A:
|
It is encouraged that the sponsor letter and letters of recommendation be sent directly to the committee coordinator. |
