Children and Science
Kids learn about magnetism by seeing a model Maglev train at work.

The Magnet Lab, in partnership with LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library, offers ocassional workshops for parents and young children designed to show parents how to turn their kids onto the science in the world around them.

At these workshops, which parents and their children attend together, parents learn strategies for taking everyday things and turning them into science experiences. Kids and their moms and dads explore the mysteries of sinking and floating with a hands-on activity, and take short observation walks to gather material for science scrapbooks.

These free programs target kids from pre-school to third grade and their parents.

Kids learn that science feeds their natural curiosity: It’s asking questions about the world around them, then trying to answer those questions. The workshops prepare them for the kind of inquiry they’ll encounter in science classes. Parents learn how to encourage their kids to listen, observe and dig for the reasons behind what they see and hear.

Currently there are no workshops scheduled, but check back soon for information on future workshops.
