Public Tours

Group tours of the Mag Lab are available for free to the general public for groups of eight or more. Tours last about an hour and are scheduled at least three weeks in advance. Don't belong to a group? The lab hosts free public tours of the facility on the third Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. No reservations are required for this standing tour; just show up and check in at the reception desk. Scientists, researchers, educators and Center staff serve as tour guides, each one providing a unique perspective on the cutting-edge research conducted at the laboratory. These tours include a general overview of the Magnet Lab and the research conducted here as well as explanations of the different types of magnets used here, including resistive magnets, superconducting magnets, pulsed magnets and our world-record hybrid magnet.
Come take a tour and find out the answer to these and other magnet mysteries:
- What's the magnetic field strength of the Earth?
- What does "NMR" stand for, and why are those three letters so important to scientists?
- What is the coldest temperature you'll find in the Mag Lab?
- Why does our lab have the highest electricity bill in the region?

We also offer special tours for student groups that include a hands-on learning activity. See the On-site Outreach page for more information.
