Center For Integrating Research and Learning

ArrowGraduate Opportunities in Physics

We offer graduate opportunities in physics at each of our three campuses.

Florida State University

Since the MagLab was established in 1990, FSU has developed an active research program in condensed matter physics, complementing the existing program built around the Center for Materials Research and Technology (MARTECH) and the physics department. This has created an exciting environment for graduate students to do research leading to a Ph.D. in physics. The program involves experimental and theoretical research in a variety of areas, including:

  • High temperature superconductivity
  • Organic conductors
  • Heavy fermions
  • Quantum Hall effect
  • Metal-insulator transitions
  • Magnetic superlattices
  • Colossal magnetoresistance

In addition to the condensed matter program, FSU physics has active research programs in high energy and nuclear physics.

University of Florida

In response to the opportunities provided by the Magnet Lab, UF has augmented its physics program and established strong ties with UF's McKnight Brain Institute, the Center for Structural Biology, the College of Medicine, and the MICROFABRITECH program in collaboration with the Materials Science and Engineering Department. This network provides physics graduate students with a wealth of opportunities for cross-disciplinary experiences.

Los Alamos National Laboratory

Scientists at the Magnet Lab’s Los Alamos National Lab facility also participate in the graduate research programs of the Florida universities through courtesy faculty appointments at UF and FSU. These scientists can supervise graduate research carried out by students at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, thereby creating unique opportunities for students to engage in research that requires pulsed magnetic fields. Researchers at LANL also have faculty appointments at other universities in the U.S.
