High School Externship

All aboard! Students work on a boat powered by electric and magnetic fields.

This program places students in the center of the action – a working scientific laboratory. Through their school's externship coordinator, students are paired with Mag Lab scientists and researchers. Supervised by Center educators, students work alongside the scientists throughout their externship. Over the course of their semester- or year-long program, these researchers-in-training spend six to 10 after-school hours per week gaining hands-on experience in topics such as physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering. During previous externships, students have done everything from build magnetically levitated boats to design calculations for low-temperature refrigeration systems.

This program furthers the Center’s mission of encouraging students to pursue upper-level science courses in high school and college.
