Center For Integrating Research and Learning

ArrowSummer at the MagLab

While most classrooms are empty over summer, the MagLab is as busy as ever in June and July, training tomorrow‘s scientists through an array of engaging, hands-on programs for students and teachers run by our educational arm, the Center for Integrating Research and Learning.

Below is a quick overview of our 2013 summer programs, including dates and applications deadlines. Follow the links for more information.

We also have plenty of stuff for lifelong learners of any age, online or in person ... check out our For Everyone resources at the bottom of the page.

For Undergraduates

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
This eight-week summer internship program matches undergraduate students with scientists at the Magnet Lab‘s three sites, offering them unique opportunities to explore science at the extremes of magnetic fields, pressure and temperature while working alongside some of the finest scientists, magnet designers and engineers in the world.
2013 Dates:
Program: June 3–July 26
Application Deadline: March 29

For Middle School Students

MagLab Summer Camp
This camp provides hands-on enrichment activities for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders who express a keen interest in science and engineering and want to develop a better understanding of physics. We offer two one-week camps for both boys and girls who will work collaboratively on science and engineering projects, participate in field trips, and interact with scientists and engineers.
2013 Dates:
Program: June 10–14, June 17–21 (two sessions)
Application Deadline: April 5

ERC-FREEDM/Renewable Energy Camp
In this week-long, free camp open to students from Tallahassee‘s Fairview Middle School, kids participate in electricity, renewable energy and engineering-based activities and visit several local electric power stations.
2013 Dates:
Program: June 3–7
Application Deadline: March 27

SciGirls
Since 2006, the MagLab and partner WFSU have run this two-week, hands-on summer camp that inspires middle and high school girls to pursue careers in science and engineering. Girls are exposed to a wide range of science disciplines, engage in both indoor and outdoor learning, conduct extensive group work, and interact with local scientists and engineers.
2013 Dates:
Program: July 15–26
Application Deadline: March 29

For High School Students

ERC-FREEDM/Young Scholars Program
This is a five-week paid internship for high school students from partner high schools in Tallahassee (Godby, Leon or Rickards). Organized in collaboration with Florida State University‘s Center for Advanced Power Systems and the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering, this program focuses on steering college-bound students toward renewable energy engineering disciplines and features numerous engineering-based field trips and activities.
2013 Dates:
Program: June 17–July 19
Application Deadline: March 27

For Teachers

Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)
This six-week summer residential program for U.S. citizens gives K-12 teachers from across the country the chance to participate in real-world science and cutting-edge magnetic field research. Through weekly seminars, discussion groups, professional development and technology workshops, teachers develop strategies and resources to translate their experience into curriculum materials for their classrooms.
2013 Dates:
Program: June 10–July 19
Application Deadline: April 26

ERC-FREEDM Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)
In this RET program organized by the MagLab, teachers work closely with FREEDM mentors at Florida State University‘s Center for Advanced Power Systems.
2013 Dates:
Program: June 17–July 19
Application Deadline: March 27

For Everyone

Monthly Tours
Group tours of the MagLab are available for free to the general public for groups of eight or more. Tours last about an hour and are scheduled at least three weeks in advance. Don‘t belong to a group? The lab hosts free public tours on the third Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. No reservations are required for this standing tour; just show up and check in at the reception desk (or schedule a tour for a group of 10 or more).

Science in Literature
This is beach reading for brainiacs. Think science is all test tubes and microscopes? Think again! Drama, passion, terror, suspense: That‘s the real stuff of physics, chemistry, biology and other sciences. Pick up any of the books listed in this section and you‘ll see what we mean.

MagLab U
This is one-stop shopping for nearly anything you might want to know about electricity and magnetism. From André-Marie Ampère to Wilhelm Weber, from 600 BC to the 21st century, from one end of the World Wide Web to the other: All you need is a mouse and an inquiring mind.
