Critical current density values are all normalized to the superconductor cross-section and are in A/mm2 (the units most commonly used for magnet applications). The criterion used for determining critical current measurement is not consistent, especially in the case of HTS superconductors.

A set of empirical relations has been developed that have proven to describe the critical surface of Nb3Sn superconductors with very high accuracy. Typical standard deviations amount to 1% for applied fields ranging from 1 to 13 T, temperatures ranging from 4 K up to the critical temperature and the complete axial compressive strain regime. This set of equations has been employed to develop a Scaling Spreadsheet based on a Microsoft Excel Visual Basic programming code that contains direct calculations of Ic, Bc2* and Tc values as function of a limited set of input parameters. It enables the user to accurately inter- or extrapolate data from a limited set of measured critical current values for an unknown Nb3Sn strand material.
The code is "open source" so that the user has the opportunity to modify the equations for his/her specific requirements.
