Magnets & Materials

ArrowResearch & Development

To support major projects and advance magnet technology, The Mag Lab conducts research and development in several related technologies. These include:

Applied Superconductivity Center
Leading the materials-research charge is the world-leading renowned Applied Superconductivity Center (ASC), which joined the Magnet Lab and Florida State University in 2006. The ASC advances the science and technology of superconductivity by investigating low temperature and high temperature materials.

Cryogenics
The objectives of the cryogenics research and development program are to study the fundamental fluid dynamics and heat transfer of liquid helium, apply cryogenic cooling technology to large scale systems, and develop and test cryogenic component hardware.

Materials Development and Characterization
The Materials Development and Characterization Group (MD&C) is responsible for research on materials used to make high field magnets. We investigate the physical, mechanical and micro-structural properties of a wide range of materials used in magnets and cryogenic machinery.
