Title: Probing spin texture in magnetic field induced quantum phases in a spin 1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, Cs2CuBr4

Synopsis:Frustrated magnets represent a very interesting class of electronic systems with strong correlations. The low temperature state of these magnets is a disordered spin liquid, in which the motion of spins is highly correlated. The nature of the quantum ground state and elementary excitations in two- and three-dimensional spin liquids is a long-standing problem. We investigate a 2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular (frustrated) lattice. On such a lattice, the frustration-fluctuation interplay leads to many new phenomena. We are using NMR microscopy to explore the phase diagram of frustrated materials, identify novel-phase transitions and probe the nature of the states with short- and long-range correlations.

Q: What's the best thing about working at the lab?
A: Having the access to the best technical infrastructure and the best state-of-the-art measurement techniques and instrumentation. I tremendously enjoy working with, and learning from, my colleagues in the lab.
Q: What you miss most about home when you're here:
A: My beautiful tesorinho and my wine!
Q: What's the most unscientific thing about you?
A: I love biking and spending summers somewhere in the Mediterranean, soirees with Luca, pondering on the meaning of life with Karin, that and everything else with tesorinho.
Q: Scientist and non-scientist: Whom would you most like to meet?
A: Well, most of them are dead – so I guess I'll go for non-scientist – Valeria Solarino. (Editor's note: Solarino, 32, is an Italian actress whose movies include "Happiness Costs Nothing," "Secret Journey" and "Sea Purple.")
Q: What are you reading now?
A: "Death with Interruptions" by Jose Saramago (Editor's note: This philosophical, death-takes-a-holiday novel earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly. It centers on what happens when, on New Year's Day, people stop dying.)
