In his own words
“The Magnet Lab provided me the opportunity to work alongside leading scientists and exposed me to a culture of research and science unparalleled in my career. It also affords me the chance to expose my students to a similar environment, which brings benefits to their work both with me and in their own future endeavors.
I became extremely interested in science education and outreach by participating in many of his commitments.
“I learned the importance of collaborative work, the advantages of becoming familiar with the interests of others, and the benefits of providing assistance where I am reasonably able to.
“My experience at the Mag Lab differed from other educational/research experiences in that I was always properly tasked and challenged as a student. In addition, access to the expertise of others was always available. Finally, the equipment allowed me to become knowledgeable of several techniques that enhanced my skill set as a scientist and instructor.”
How mentors make a difference
“Dr. (James) Brooks was laid-back, but provided an intense approach to science and research that was demanding and rigorous. His get-it-done attitude was effective in shaping my own attitude toward research and science. I also became extremely interested in science education and outreach by participating in many of his commitments.”
