In his own words
“Working at the Magnet Lab highlighted the importance of having an excellent team of people with complementary skill sets to tackle projects that were typically too large for any given scientist working in isolation.
The most important lesson from my time at the Magnet Lab is the importance of working intelligently toward a focused goal … I also learned that the obvious solution is often the best solution, but if this fails, then creative thinking is often necessary to solve the problem.

“Many people came to the Magnet Lab to work with Alan (Marshall) and the FT-MS user facility, providing opportunities to interact with many other scientists outside of the immediate Magnet Lab community. These interactions enriched my experience in graduate school and were unique to my time there.”
How mentors make a difference
“Dr. Alan Marshall’s hard work, dedication, and intelligence were a great inspiration during my graduate and post-graduate years. Alan demonstrated that it is possible to be a ‘nice guy’ while performing cutting-edge research; Alan was (and is) always willing to provide a helping hand to almost anyone in the field.”
