TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory will hold its 6th Annual Open House on Saturday, October 23, 1999, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m
This popular once-a-year event features hands-on science activities, displays, and interactive demonstrations—all geared for the public, ages K-99!
This year's theme is a "Century of Science," and a grand and comprehensive new display featuring milestones in physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology will be unveiled. Other new attractions include a levitating model train (direct from Germany), volcano eruption demonstrations, and "Who Knows What the Nose Knows" featuring a blindfold smelling competition for kids and a smelling reaction time experiment for adults. Guests also will get to see what is living in our local ponds through the lens of state-of-the-art Olympus microscopes.
Visitors to the open house enjoy a self-paced, self-guided tour of the world-class facility. Along the way, they are greeted by faculty and staff who explain their research or demonstrate some basic science or engineering principle in easily understandable terms.
In addition, the Magnet Lab's Community Science and Education Partners — ODYSSEY Science Center, St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, Birdsong Nature Center, the Sea-to-Sea Program with their "touch tanks," and other local groups—will repeat their very successful 1998 participation.
Another popular open house event — The NHMFL Youth Science & Art Contest — is already underway with schools in Leon, Wakulla, and Gadsen counties. All artwork received for the competition will be displayed in the laboratory, and winners will be awarded prizes by NHMFL director Dr. Jack Crow during the open house.
The laboratory is located in Tallahassee's Innovation Park, 1800 E. Paul Dirac Dr., near the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. For more information, call 850-644-0311 or 644-6392.
