Mielke Tapped for Leadership Role at Los Alamos National Lab

Chuck Mielke
Chuck Mielke, who has 20 years’ research experience in pulsed high magnetic fields, has been named deputy group leader of the Materials Physics and Applications Division, Condensed Matter and Magnet Science Group (MPA-CMMS) at Los Alamos National Lab, home of the Mag Lab’s Pulsed Field user program.
Among the duties of his new position, Mielke serves as director of the Magnet Lab’s Pulsed Field Facility and co-principal investigator on the Mag Lab’s National Science Foundation grant. In addition to high magnetic-field science and technology, MPA-CMMS specializes in experimental physics research, with a strong emphasis on fundamental condensed matter physics with complimentary thrusts in correlated electron materials, thermal physics and actinide chemistry.
“I’m honored to continue my long relationship with the Magnet Lab and with the high magnetic field user community,” said Mielke. “I believe our program’s world-unique capabilities will help the scientific community to make important inroads into the science that provides our nation with greater energy security and fundamental understanding of materials in extreme conditions.”
Said Magnet Lab Director Greg Boebinger of the appointment, “Chuck has come up through the ranks at the Pulsed Field Facility. Over the years he’s proven that he possesses a wide range of skills – from building things, to measuring stuff, to managing folks. It’s great to have him on board.”
Mielke has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and has presented numerous invited talks at national and international conferences and workshops. He came to Los Alamos in 1996 after receiving his Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from Clark University. He has been a member of the Pulsed Field Facility throughout his tenure at Los Alamos, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow and more recently as the head of the Mag Lab’s Pulsed Field user program.
