Energy@MagLab Workshop 2012
Energy@MagLab, a workshop on the overlap between MagLab facilities and the worlds research needs in energy, is scheduled for Nov. 7-8, 2012, at the MagLabs headquarters in Tallahassee, Florida. The two-day workshop will feature plenary talks covering leading energy frontier research. Poster sessions will feature high-magnetic-field research techniques that address energy research needs.
Scope of Workshop
In recognition of the growing portfolio of energy-related user research at the MagLab, one of the four major science drivers in the MagLabs vibrant, interdisciplinary User Program is Energy and Environment. The Energy@MagLab workshop is designed to build awareness and increase the effectiveness of high-magnetic-field research to address energy frontier research needs for:
- Petroleum (distillation, fracking and environmental mitigation)
- Catalysts
- Batteries
- Fuel Cells
The workshop will feature talks by energy researchers from universities, national laboratories and the private sector. Poster sessions will focus on presenting high-magnetic-field research techniques that are relevant to energy research. Examples include:
Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR)
– to assay tens of thousands of compounds in complex mixtures such as petroleum and biofuels
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), including quadrupolar NMR
– to probe in-situ location of specific elements in catalysts, fuels and energy storage devices
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) on batteries and fuel cells
– to track lithium and hydrogen during discharge/recharge cycle
Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR)
– to probe in-situ information on electronic environments in catalysts and solar cells
Catalysis in High Magnetic Fields
– to alter physics and chemistry at interfaces to test models
High Magnetic Fields and Materials for Energy
– to alter electronic properties of materials used in the physics and chemistry of energy to guide design
