SCM1: 18/20 T Magnet, with Dilution Refrigerator
A top-loading dilution refrigerator is permanently installed in this magnet. It has a base temperature of 20 mk and 400 microwatts of cooling power at 100mK. A 5 mm hole the length of the general purpose probe allows installation of optical fibers or special leads. Experiments that can be performed in this system include:
SCM1: 18/20 T Magnet, with Dilution Refrigerator
- transport
- magnetization
- susceptibility
- heat capacitance
- high pressure
- surface conductivity
- NMR
- microwave studies
- optics w/fibers
A rotating and straight probe are available for experiments. Sample is immersed in dilute phase 25 mm sample space.

Microwave and RF Measurements
Lloyd Engel has equipped a probe for this magnet system with a pair of coaxial cables that lead from room temperature to the mixing chamber. The mixture has cooled to as low as 32 mK with the probe in place. The cables have been tested to 40 GHz, and should make a wide variety of resonant or broadband, microwave and RF measurements possible. Details of the connection between the cables and the sample are important in any microwave experiment, and can affect measurement bandwidth and the base temperature of a sample mounted on this probe.
