ArrowVibrating Sample Magnetometer User Instrumentation

The Magnet Lab has two VSM heads: a small and a large bore. The small bore allows the measurement of samples with dimensions up to 6.3 mm (0.248 in.) in diameter and 8 mm long. The large bore accommodates samples up to 10 mm in diameter. The noise level for both VSMs in the resistive magnets is 10-3 EMU; thus only samples with a moment greater than a few milliEMU should be measured with this technique. The VSM can operate at temperatures between 0.7 K and 300 K and in fields up to 33 T.

VSM Sample Mounts

Users of the VSM have a number of standard sample mount designs from which to choose. To facilitate quick sample change, the user may wish to use multiple sample mounts, but do not assume that more than five sample mounts are available at any given time. Any special requirements should be conveyed to Eun Sang Choi.

VSM Sample Holders

Click on the blue link above to see diagrams of our sample holders. Use of the Thin-film Bottom Mount VSM sample holder can result in damage to the sample if it is not adequately protected from blunt shock during the insertion of the sample rod.
