The Pulsed Field Program is located in Northern New Mexico at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The user program is designed to provide researchers with a balance of the highest research magnetic fields and robust scientific diagnostics. The connection with the DC field facility is strong and complementary in expertise. The facility's purpose is not to achieve the highest magnetic fields possible, but to create the very best research environment and to provide users with assistance from some of the world’s leading experts in science conducted in pulsed magnets. All of the user support scientists are active researchers and collaborate with multiple users per year.

The facility is located in five buildings totaling more than 75,000 square feet and featuring:

  • a 1400 MVA generator to support the 60 T long pulse magnet and the 100 T multi-shot
  • a 0.25 MJ, 17.5 nH, fast capacitor bank to power the single turn 300 tesla apparatus
  • a 2.6 MJ capacitor bank (serves 100 tesla magnet insert coil)
  • a fully multiplexed and computer-controlled 6-position, 1.6 mega-joule capacitor bank system serving four user magnets to 65 T

Ten user support scientists, specializing in pulsed magnetic field research, are on hand, as is a technician and an engineer with extensive experience in pulsed magnet development. A machine shop is fully dedicated to the MagLab and supported by four technicians. The 1400 MVA Generator Facility is staffed by two technicians and two engineers for support of the large magnet systems. Computer support is provided by the LANL infrastructure with multiple technicians on call. The Metallurgy and Materials Synthesis Laboratory, Superconducting Technology Center and Center for Integrated Nano-Science are available in collaborative mode. LANL Research Library is fully available.

Capacitor Bank-Driven Magnets

These magnets support the following research: magneto-optics (IR through UV), magnetization and magneto-transport from 350 mK to 300K; pressure from 10 kbar typical up to 100 kbar; GHz conductivity, MHz conductivity, pulse echo ultra-sound spectroscopy, magnetoconductivity and dilatometry.

Superconducting Magnets

These magnets support the same research as pulsed fields, plus: thermal-expansion, specific heat and 20 mK to 600 K temperatures. Heat capacity, THz resistivity, magnetometry and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).
