In 2007, the Center for Educating Research & Learning and teachers from Tallahassee's Ruediger Elementary School established First Thursdays, a series of after-school mini-workshops designed to enhance science teaching in Ruediger's classrooms. Teachers attend the workshops expecting to be introduced to at least one inquiry activity that they can implement the following day in their classrooms. Each session concentrates on the content associated with the activity, strategies for implementing and extending the activity, literature links for reading and writing with the activity, and ideas for helping students develop their own questions about the activity. The workshops are conducted from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The series proved so popular that it is being continued for the 2008-2009 school year.

Although the workshops are targeted at Ruediger teachers, other Leon County elementary school educators are welcome to attend after pre-registering. For more information, contact pdixon@magnet.fsu.edu.
