SciGirls is a two-week, hands-on summer camp run by the The Magnet Lab and WFSU that inspires girls ages 10-16 to pursue careers in science.

The camp, launched in 2006, has run for three consecutive years. In July 2008, two camps were offered. SciGirls I was for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders. This camp was free. SciGirls II was for returning SciGirls campers and rising 8th, 9th and 10th graders. Cost for this camp was $300.

In the 2008 year's SciGirls I camp, girls traveled to a variety of area sites, engaging in hands-on activities that underscore important science principles. They conducted an invasive species survey at Wakulla Springs, explored the Marianna Caverns, and spent a day at the Magnet Lab learning about water under the Earth’'s mantle as well as water from outer space. They also snorkeled in the Gulf of Mexico to explore sea life. Each day provided an opportunity for fun, excitement and new areas of science to explore.

Some of the kids I told about the camp said it was going to be nerdy. But it really has been fun and hands on.

In the 2008 SciGirls II camp, girls explored science in more depth and in ways designed to teach strategies to synthesize the experiences. From digging up bones for a forensic anthropology exercise to making models of comets from dry ice and other ingredients, campers participated in in-depth experiences that challenged their scientific knowledge. Activities included snorkeling in the Gulf of Mexico and learning how marine biologists conduct research to using computer programs to track invasive species.

How to Apply

We hope to offer the camp again in 2009. Please revisit this page in the spring of 2009 for more details.
